2011's Best Episodes: Oprah's Last Lesson in Gratitude, the Housewives' Game Evening Goes Wild

The famous host the famous host oprah Winfrey From Oprah's remarkably low-key farewell for the year's most soul-crushing break-around the Great Wife (Kalicia, no!), the season was filled with fantastic several hours of television - virtually which we seen. There has been teary goodbyes (Friday Evening Lights' Texas forever! Smallville's tights and travel arrangements!), tense face-offs (why can't all CIA interrogations occur round the front porch from the cabin, like on Homeland?) as well as we made room for just about any little Glee (because certain underdogs deserved it). Which made this list. Stay updated all week for that top 25. Here's the initial batch inside our extended countdown of 2011's best episodes: 25. " The The famous host the famous host oprah Winfrey Show Finale," The The famous host the famous host oprah Winfrey ShowAfter two-and-a-half decades and 4,561 episodes, we figured the entire of Daytime would use her final hour round the air to steer a parade of stars who'd sing her praises and don't forget all the crazy occasions on her behalf account couch. (But that, since it calculates, was just what the second- and third-to-final several hours were for.) Rather, the ultimate show was simply O, reading through via a prepared speech in the bare set that reflected round the many training she'd learned which thanked her fans. "This show might be the truly amazing adoration for my existence," she mentioned through tears. No site visitors, keep surprises away, no refurbishments (not necessarily one person got an automobile!) It absolutely was simple, nostalgic, and a terrific way to finish popular chapter. 24. "Lysergic Acidity Diethylamide," FringeThe title alone established this episode is a trip. When Olivia attempted to extricate William Bell's awareness from hers for LSD, the earth went topsy-turvy, as well as the episode switched from live-action to animation. The twisty, Beginning-like hour also marked Leonard Nimoy's farewell for the series. 23. "Melissa McCarthy," Saturday Evening LiveOn the heels of her large Emmy win, we'd high wants McCarthy's first hosting gig on SNL. She did not dissatisfy. The Mike and Molly star shimmied her way within the stage for just about any amusing dance number along with her Bridesmaids buddy Kristen Wiig, made brazen, undesirable sexual advances toward Jason Sudekis as Arlene, a horny office manager, and taste-examined Hidden Valley Ranch dressing in a way that gave us the dry heaves - first from laughing so desperately after which it with actual nausea. (Is it possible to Garlic clove clove Ranch Blast me now?) 22. "Game Evening Gone Wild!," The Particular Regular folks of Beverly HillsAll we're saying is always that if you mix wealthy Beverly Slopes regular folks, booze, Pictionary, together with a not-so-lucid Hilton sister, situations is certain to get interesting. It started accidently enough, since the ladies headed to Dana's house for game evening - however everyone got wasted, broken-legged Brandi accused Kim to complete very meth inside the bathroom and Kyle found her sister's defense by calling Brandi a trashy slut. You remain classy, Beverly Slopes. 21. "Not So Great,In . The Way In Which I Met Your MotherMother did not have shortage of shockers this season, but not one of them was more surprising or poignant than when Marshall, who was simply trying to attain his father to see him very good news, learned from Lily that his father died from cardiac event. Jason Segel's quick switch from jubilation to inconsolable heartbreak was Emmy-worthy - especially when you're conscious he did the scene in one take.

Bond Producer Wants Daniel Craig For Five More Movies

Hey, if he ain't broke, why cast another Bond? Producer Michael G. Wilson wants to take that position when it comes to Daniel Craig as the legendary super spy. In a recent interview with People UK, Wilson revealed that he hopes to keep the latest Bond around for a record-breaking eight movies. With Craig currently filming his third Bond movie, "Skyfall," that would mean five more movies to break the record set by Roger Moore. "Filming has gone very well so far and Id love Daniel to surpass Rogers record and do eight pictures," Wilson told People. "Daniels been an absolute pleasure to be around because he takes the role so seriously. Theres really no one more passionate about making these films work than him hes a film makers dream." The producer and star have had no discussions about breaking the record, and Wilson said that talks would only happen once Craig wrapped on "Skyfall." "A lot of people have said Daniels been their favourite Bond since Sean Connery and I cant argue with them. Hes doing a great job," Wilson said. The producer also spoke about why he's so excited for "Skyfall." According to Wilson, Craig and director Sam Mendes are channeling a kind of Bond that hasn't been around lately. "The director Sam Mendes and Daniel are taking it back to a 60s feel more Sean. I think that's what the fans wanted," Wilson said. "There's a magical 'Goldfinger' feel surrounding it all. It's all very exciting. I can't wait for people to see the movie because I think we're making a very special Bond." Aside from hosting the first Bond film since 2008's "Quantum of Solace," next year also marks the 50th anniversary of the classic series. To commemorate the momentous occassion, Wilson would ideally like to bring together all of the men who have played Bond in the past. "We'd really like to get all six together. We're trying to find a way for fans to celebrate with us because they've been the reason the Bond films have been the success they have," he said. Would you like to see Daniel Craig in five more Bond movies after "Skyfall"? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

"Glee's" Chord Overstreet Chord Overstreet's Sam Evans and his "trouty mouth" return to Fox's Glee on Tuesday, but not everything is as it was when he last roamed the halls of McKinley High. When viewers last saw Sam, his secret romance with prom date Mercedes (Amber Riley) was revealed after New Directions' dismal finish at Nationals. That changed after an offseason that saw Overstreet part ways with the series in July after his option to return as a series regular was not picked up and Sam was said to have moved out of state with his financially strapped family. The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Overstreet to talk Sam's return, how things have changed and what his comeback will do for the Rachel-less New Directions at Sectionals. Here are five things to know about Sam's return. PHOTOS: 'Glee's Unforgettable Guest Stars' 1. White Chocolate, explained. In the promo for Tuesday's episode, titled "Hold on to Sixteen," Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith) head to Kentucky to find a secret weapon to help New Directions go head-to-head with the Trouble Tones at Sectionals, where they find Sam showing off his abs and performing with White Chocolate. "They come and find Sam and want to get him back at McKinley helping New Directions and he's really glad to see them," Overstreet says. "I think White Chocolate says it all; I don't want to give away every move White Chocolate makes because those are sacred moves," he adds with a laugh. But what's he doing with the group of seemingly exotic dancers? "Sam's been working his tail off -- literally," Overstreet says with a laugh. PHOTOS: 'Glee' Season 3: The Episodics 2. Mercedes isn't thrilled to see her former flame return now that she's moved on with linebaker Shane (LaMarcus Tinker), who has become her biggest champion. "She's got mixed feelings," Overstreet says. "Sam's expecting things to go back to how it was when he left and that's now how life goes. He's a little disappointed by that." Sam in turn will do anything he can to woo her back, including joining the synchronize swim team. "Sam wants a letterman jacket and will do what ever it takes to get one," he adds, noting that Sam's feelings for Mercedes come rushing back the moment he sees her. STORY: 'Glee's' Amber Riley: Mercedes is 'Spreading Her Wings' 3. "Hold on to Sixteen," the episode's title, is especially significant for Sam. "Sam had to grow up a lot faster than he was ready to so he could help support his family and help with their living situation," Overstreet says. "You get to be young once so hold on to it and don't take it for granted. Sam missed being able to be himself and be young and not have a big plate of responsibilities and he's going to try as hard as he can to get that youth back." STORY: 'Glee's' Ryan Murphy on Chord Overstreet's Return, Season 3 Spoilers' The Glee Project's' Future 4. Family ties. While Sam's family left town after losing their house and briefly living in an apartment, Finn and Rachel will offer the residents of New Directions members for a temporary shelter to Sam but not before Sam's parents (Smallville's John Schneider and Guiding Light's Tanya Clarke) agree to his departure. "Sam's parents are really loving and understanding because they let him go back to Ohio to compete at Sectionals," Overstreet says. "They've been going through a hard time and it's really cool to see the relationship between all of them. There's some good stuff with his mom and dad." STORY: 'Glee': Chord Overstreet's Top 5 Performances 5. Trouble Tones vs. New Directions. The big face-off between McKinley's dueling glee clubs comes to a head Tuesday at Sectionals, but does the Rachel-less club stand a chance? Overstreet is confident New Directions has what it takes to pull off the underdog upset. "I think Sam's new dance moves will play a big factor and add that edge," he says. "You've got a group of talented people who are ready to whoop some Trouble Tone tail." Glee airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Fox. ICM, Part 3: Rizvi & Agency Board Blow Off Chris Silbermanns Demands (For Now)

ICM Imploding, Part 2: Chris Silbermann Forces Decision By Largest Investor And Calls ICM Board Meeting Friday; Secretly Relying On Mike Ovitzs Advice And Help ICM investor Suhail Rizvi and the ICM Board today are blowing off yesterday’s demands byICM President Chris Silbermann for a Friday decision andboard meeting about the management buyout. The reason citedis that Silbermann hasyet toput anything in writing. “I think there’s a lot of concern as to whether his plan is deliverable or executable. There’s nothing to consider until it exists,” one insider tells me.”He’s been told to put it in writing.” So until that happens,Silbermann will just continue waiting for an answer whether Rizvi Traverse Management will accept aboyout of its 40% stake in ICM. Or whether the ICM Board will agree to it as well.”Chris went to NY Thursday because he felt he was not getting a serious enough consideration by Suhail. So Chris tried to goose the issue,” one of my sources explains. Meanwhile, Silbermann’smanagement buyout plan remains so ill-formed that he can’t even explain it in detail yet to ICM’s agents. At one recentpoint, Silbermann confessed to several agents in his camp that they might have to expect a significant pay cut –even a halving of their salaries –if financial backing or an asset-based loan can’t be obtained. That took the agents by surprise, to say the least. Also,Silbermann claimed that ICM Chairman Jeff Berg was on board with this management buyout when, in fact, Berg is neither for or against it since his camp hasn’t been given any details about it yet. Another latest development is that Bob Broder and Ted Chervin are no longer solidly in Silbermann’s camp because of the ongoingdivisiveness and destabilization of the agency since I first broke this story. (ICM Imploding! Chris Silbermann & Jeff Berg Battle For Control: Rizvi Sits On Sidelines; How Long Will Warring Last?) Clients are calling daily to ask questions and express fears whether ICM is imploding. Had Silbermann presented a well thought-outplan and kept his unhappiness private(instead of talking about it openly in bars with Hollywood, for example), all this could have stayed behind closed doors. Instead, his handling of this situation has raised questions about Silbermann’s maturity level to take over the agency some day. As for Silbermann asking for Michael Ovitz’s advice and help to raise money, it’s well-known in Hollywood that Silbermann and his family have had many personal and professional ties to Ovitz. “No one thinks Ovitz can raise $50 million let alone the $200 million necessary to buy out Rizvi. The view of that is ‘good luck’,” one source tells me. That Ovitz is involved at all has even put ICM’s reputation in jeopardy and led to consternation in many Hollywood circles. As one major player whose phone has been ringing off the hook about it summed up the reaction for me, “They think that Mike Ovitz is the biggest doofus on the planet, and Chris Silbermann is the second biggest doofus.”

'Game Of Thrones' Set Photos Show Dragons, Qarth

For just about any land impacted by winter, it seems awful warm and sunny in Westeros and also over the narrow sea. Entertainment Weekly sent one lucky reporter to visit the "Wager on Thrones" set, where the cast and crew are busy filming season two. Because the mag only revealed a little teaser in the set visit, they did showcase a couple of awesome new photos within the set that tease the type of products to can be found in the arrival season. Certainly the most effective from the 3 images might be the main one (above) that shows how Dany is choosing to maneuver her dragons. I guess they don't breath fire yet, good realization they have been in wicker baskets and so are being moved around the equine. Gleam new location in Dubrovnik used for King's Landing moments. Fort Lovrijenac doesn't look as impressive round the outdoors since the Malta locations found in season one, but I am certain it seems much like lovely inside. Up last can be a shot from the heavily guarded gate with 20 spear-moving sentries standing outdoors. In most probability, this really is really the doorway to Qarth, a wealthy purchasing and selling city that Daenerys visits in season two. If that is the problem, it's the home to numerous unfortunate occurrences that Dany may take a hit through inside the second season of "Wager on Thrones." These set photos come hot in the tail from the recently-released "Wager on Thrones" featurette which teases season two, although after some more behind-the-moments goodies than these EW photos have. Exactly what are you most searching toward in "Wager on Thrones" season two? Reveal inside the comments section below or on Twitter!

Sony Races to Create Internet Alternative to Cable TV

This story first appeared in the Dec. 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.our editor recommendsSony Looks to Move PlayStation Titles to Tablets, Mobile Devices At a breakfast hosted by the Wall Street Journal in early November, Sony CEO Howard Stringer talked about building "a different kind of TV set." A week later, the Journal reported that Sony might launch "an Internet-based alternative to cable TV." Like Netflix, Hulu and others, Sony's own PlayStation Store already makes dozens of TV shows available on-demand after they air on TV, but Sony and others know that the holy grail is to create a service so compelling that consumers would trade in their cable or satellite services. So far, though, all the Internet-based options combined have convinced only an estimated 3 percent of consumers to take that "cord-cutting" step. Sony won't comment, but its plans reportedly are to offer small bundles of channels to be delivered through Internet-connected TV sets and other devices, like Blu-ray players and PlayStation 3 consoles. Media companies, though, don't want to offer up their best content and alienate their big cable and satellite customers, so Sony will have to settle for niche channels, at least initially. "Sony's heart is in the right place here, but it's going to face a lot of resistance in getting this new service off the ground," wrote the Motley Fool's Rick Aristotle Munarriz. And Sony's competition isn't only cable and satellite providers -- it's also the likes of Microsoft, which already offers limited TV through its Xbox 360; Google, with its Google TV and rumored plans to test an Internet-based service in Kansas City; and Apple, which has Apple TV and other initiatives yet to be revealed. But what the TV industry shouldn't expect is much more cord-cutting over the next few years, says NPD analyst Russ Crupnick. The worry instead should be over "cord-throttling," whereby consumers who use Hulu, Netflix and whatever Sony comes up with downgrade their pay-TV packages. Crupnick asks, "Do they really need to spend $100 for all those channels?" Related Topics Howard Stringer Sony

Indian gov't adds muscle to promote domestic pics

GOA -- The National Film Development Corp.'s annual market, the Film Bazaar (Nov. 24-27), is spreading its wings. This year, 23 South Asian-themed co-productions from 12 countries are looking to attract financing at the market. These include "No Man's Land" director Danis Tanovic's "Tiger" (France); Roberto San Pirtro's "The Vegetarian" (Italy); Prakash Belawadi's "The Pollutant" (Sweden); Alka Raghuram's "Burqa Boxers" (U.S.); and Sangeeta Datta's "Stranger Across the Sea" (U.K.). Indian projects include Dibakar Banerjee's "The Boy and the Bandit"; veteran Ketan Mehta's "Noor -- The Princess Spy"; and Sopan Muller's "Free Fall," on which Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty ("Slumdog Millionaire") is a producer. "International co-productions offer not only co-funding but also easier access to distribution and exhibition avenues abroad and maintenance of production and technical standards of an internationally acceptable quality. It remains an objective with NFDC to facilitate growth in this area with a view to enhancing the international audience base of Indian cinema (and) revenue generation from multiple territories," said NFDC managing director Nina Lath Gupta. Gupta recognizes that the path to global recognition is difficult. "We face several challenges, one of them being the need to figure out how we can increase film exports. Another key challenge is the need to leverage India as a shooting destination and thus also increasing tourism," she said. In order to surmount these challenges, the NFDC has integrated with the Indian tourism ministry's Incredible India campaign to increase local cinema's visibility abroad. Promotions began at Cannes this year and continued at Toronto and the AFM, with efforts at the Berlin and Hong Kong fests due in 2012. The ministry will also award $20,000 to the best project in the co-production market. Meanwhile, the Film Bazaar is growing, with 500 delegates attending this year from 40 countries, up 11% from 2010, and 40 industry screenings, up 13% from 2010. Film Bazaar also has several international partnerships. There are six projects in the Screenwriters' Lab, designed to encourage screenwriters with original Indian stories, in partnership with the Binger Filmlab (Netherlands), Venice and Cinecitta Luce. The work-in-progress lab will see filmmakers screening rough cuts of their pics to international sales agents, critics and film funds in order to get their input. The long-awaited creation of a film commission for the country is expected soon. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Roush Review: Last Guy Standing

Tim Allen Even TV comfort food comes with an expiration date. So it's with Tim Allen's comeback vehicle around the network that made him a star.Last Guy Standing (tonight, 8/7c, ABC) is essentially a weary, gender-corrected version of Allen's hit Do It Yourself. Main difference is the fact that this time around, Allen's the only real guy inside a household of women: a lengthy-suffering wife (Nancy Travis, who has a tendency to relax having a glass of vino and smile at her husband's boorish jokes) and three shrill kids, together with a single mother, a spoiled princess along with a tomboy (the second performed by Kaitlyn Dever, who had been so terrific on Justified as scrappy little Loretta and is just one of many talents being wasted here).Want more fall TV news? Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now! When I noted within the Fall Preview problem, "This Based on Tim vehicle will seem like Old Home (Improvement) Week to his legion of fans, however the buzz of nostalgia might be drowned by the yawn of familiarity over this type of hammy retread." Allen has become playing an alternative on Tim Taylor as Irritated Old Guy: this time around known as Mike Baxter, who works best for an outside sports company that reeks of testosterone. Or, as Mike announces with pride when he walks in to the office: "It has the aroma of balls in here."Mothballs, maybe. (Although in comparison to ABC's other "woe is guy" show it's being combined with in a few days, the intolerable Guy Up!, this feels as though a contemporary classic.)Rather than getting a Television show which to spout his gems of chauvinist knowledge, Mike is defined responsible for the business's website, where he rails in very extreme webcam close-facing various metrosexual "What went down to males?" offenses: citrus body clean, herbal hair gel, tanning beds, even soccer as "Europe's covert war for that hearts and minds of America's kids." Leading edge it isn't, but that is not what this make of middlebrow mugging is about. As you of his kids states within the second of tonight's back-to-back episodes, "He's just angry because ... we actually have no idea why." And it is virtually impossible of looking after, since we have heard everything before, also it was more amusing and fresher to begin with.Sign up to TV Guide Magazine now!

'The Avengers' Trailer Verdict: More Hulk, Less Stark, Less Loki, More Dark

I've got one word for the makers of the new Avengers trailer: Transformers. With the release of the first full trailer for Disney and Marvel's all-star 2012 superhero tentpole, fans finally get a real look at the four main heroes together -- The Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America and Thor -- with some semblance of the film's narrative on display. Loki's back, so are Nick Fury and Black Widow, Hawkeye's now on the scene, and everyone's looking like they want to do some righteous ass-kicking. Cars explode, voiceovers portend, Tony Stark cracks jokes. Awesome. Or it would be if we hadn't seen all of this before and expected every single thing that we saw in the trailer. And this gets at the crux of the Avengers problem: Given the scope and impact of the individual films, how does this one deliver something bigger, better, newer? PHOTOS: 'The Avengers': New Photos From Marvel's Superhero Film Admittedly, for a film of this scale, this "trailer" is really just an extended teaser. We're not meant to see everything yet. The movie doesn't come out for another seven months or so, and the studio and filmmakers need to save some build for the meantime. Still, take a look back at the first real Transformers: Dark of the Moon trailer. That involved characters we had seen before -- robot and human -- but managed to convey epic drama and conflict as we got hints of Chicago being completely destroyed as well as great emotional moments (note Bumblebee -- a robot(!!) -- in despair). Not only does theAvengerstrailer do none of this, but it recycles a villain from Thor. Writer-director Joss Whedon better have bigger, badder forces behind Loki to ramp up the darkness quotient or nobody's going to care. Even the Joker, one of the best-depicted comic book villains of all time in The Dark Knight, would seem less terrifying if he was brought back for another go-round. And this gets to the scale problem, too. We really only see one street of cars wrecked by Loki. Seriously? Didn't we see that done in Independence Day fifteen years ago? We really need the Avengers for this? Audiences are going to need a much bigger threat to humanity to get invested in this showdown. STORY: 'The Avengers' Trailer: Fans, Industry React And that includes the showdowns between the heroes, as well. Thus far all we get is two lame jokes from Stark, including a backhanded compliment to Bruce Banner that essentially calls attention to the ridiculousness of these superheroes in the first place. That's a dangerous game to play with fans, who want these guys/archetypes taken seriously. And at this point, Banner/The Hulk is a much more interesting character than Stark. Iron Man's theonly one we've seen more than once so far, and that second outing left a lot of fans wanting, not to mention tired of the shtick. This trailer basically does the job of getting fans excited. But that is going to wear off very quickly, and we have a long way to go until Go Time, let alone until any future sequels or further Avenger team-ups. Marvel, Disney and Whedon absolutely must have some bigger, better spectacle ahead, and be willing to show it. That wow-factor bar is set very high -- and set partially by Iron Man itself. Without the courage to put something big on the line -- in the trailer and in the movie -- this franchise darling will have fans seeking vengeance. Avengers Marvel Entertainment

Steve Jobs Bio Could Set New Sales Records

Even though it does not hit bookstores for three weeks, Steve Jobs, the authorized biography by former Time managing editor Walter Isaacson, is poised to become the bestselling book of 2011. Since Apple founder Jobs died on Oct. 5, presales of the book have skyrocketed. It is a triple No. 1 -- topping the iTunes books, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble bestseller lists. In the first few hours after Jobs' death the book jumped 42,000 percent on Amazon, going from 424 to No. 1.our editor recommendsSteve Jobs' Death Prompts His Biography Release To Be Moved By a MonthSony Pictures in Negotiations for Rights to Steve Jobs BiographySteve Jobs' Biography Sales Jump 42,000 Percent Upon Death Steve Jobs Dies at 56Related Topics•Steve Jobs Publisher Simon & Schuster appears poised to break the its own opening day sales record, set on July 12 when A Stolen Life, the book by Jaycee Dugard about her 18 years in captivity, sold 175,000 copies, including 100,000 eBooks. Sales of Steve Jobs could also exceed the sales of the best-selling non-fiction book of 2010. Decision Points, George W. Bush's memoir of his presidential years, sold 2.6 million print copies and 307,000 digital copies in 2010. With Steve Jobs No. 1 on Apple's digital book list, No. 2 on Amazon, and No. 9 on Barnes & Noble's Nook list, it should easily surpass the digital sales of Decision Points. Apple's iTunes bookstore also appears to be a beneficiary of Jobs death. PHOTOS: Steve Jobs: 10 Memorable Milestones of the Apple Co-Founder's Career Apple's digital bookstore has lagged behind its competitors. Amazon, for example, offers a Kindle app for the iPad that allows users to read their digital books across multiple devices, cutting into the need for iTunes users to adopt the later-to-the-market iBooks format. But the strong sales of Steve Jobs on the Apple bookstore relative to the Kindle and Nook suggests that Apple is drawing new customers who decide to buy Jobs' biography at his own company's bookstore. In response to the public interest, Simon & Schuster advanced the publication date from Nov. 21 to Oct. 24. The publisher had already moved up the date once before. On Aug. 15, nine days before Jobs announced he was stepping down as CEO, the company bumped the date from March 6, 2012 to Nov. 21. It also changed the title from the awkward iSteve: The Book of Jobs to the more straightforward Steve Jobs: A Biography. Simon & Schuster is determined to prevent early copies of the book from leaking out. 'Machine Gun Preacher' Makes Its Explosive Title, Stars Say

Once we could tell in the trailer, Marc Forster's "Machine Gun Preacher" is not among individuals overwrought, melodramatic, "with different true story," feel great films. Based on stars Gerard Butler and Michelle Monaghan, what sets it aside from those is always that it's about a problematic hero who finds his true calling via a violent, intense, and inspiring journey. "This is not a tale you hear each day,Inch Monaghan told MTV news. "Hes kind of quite the hero but a problematic hero, and thats just what the title entails. While you browse the story you understand your way this guy continues to be on." "Things I found fascinating is this fact guy really switched his existence around which one individual can really make a difference," she ongoing. "You hear so frequently, 'What difference is one able to person make?', or that [philanthropic work] is if you have been good within their existence and hes not. He s been in this journey and it is a genuine example to everybody." Regarding exactly what the title from the film states concerning the story, Butler stated it's explosive, however in a number of ways. Theres a lot inside that It makes the title, 'Machine Gun Preacher.'" Exactly what do you think about the actual existence story? Inform us within the comments or on Twitter!

A Gifted Man

Filmed in NY by CBS Television Studios. Executive producers, Neal Baer, Carl Beverly, Sarah Timberman, Susannah Grant; director, Jonathan Demme; writer, Grant.Michael Holt - Patrick Wilson Anna Paul - Jennifer Ehle Rita Perkins-Hall - Margo Martindale Anton - Pablo Schreiber If you slice it down to its bones (an appropriate analogy for a medical program), "A Gifted Man" owes a debt to "A Christmas Carol": The series features Patrick Wilson as the self-absorbed neurosurgeon who experiences a belated spiritual epiphany, unlocking do-gooder impulses that transform him from talented bastard into something closer to Dr. Kildare. The semi-religious component (embodied here by the ghost of doctor's past) will likely play well with CBS' heartland audience, but the longterm prognosis hangs on whether the series can find a pulse beyond just older viewers in an up-for-grabs Friday timeslot. Wilson's Dr. Michael Holt is arrogant and brilliant before a surprise visit from his ex-wife Anna (Tony winner Jennifer Ehle). Yet that chance encounter takes on a different hew when he discovers she died prior to their meeting (why he didn't hear about this earlier is a mystery best left ignored), leading him to offer his services to an overwhelmed clinic his ex had championed. Suddenly, Holt is exhibiting a more humane streak and performing pro bono surgeries -- a change that isn't lost on those around him, including his sister (Julie Benz) and office manager (Margo Martindale, built for better stuff than the pilot presents). Sis even enlists a spiritual guide ("The Wire's" Pablo Schreiber) to see if there's a way to exorcise Anna's gh-gh-ghost. Developed by Susannah Grant and run by Neal Baer (a medical doctor who worked on "ER" before "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"), "A Gifted Man" is certainly earnest, in a "Marcus Welby, M.D." kind of way. Post-sale tinkering also improved the pilot, with Anna becoming Holt's conscience in a way that better explains her presence, while extracting some humor from their only-he-sees-her encounters. Beyond establishing the premise, the opener features three medical plots -- one about a tennis prodigy, another devoted to a difficult patient (Bill Irwin) and finally Michael's grudging efforts to help an ailing kid. It's manipulative, but fairly effective. Granted, there's been no shortage of medical shows built around wish-fulfillment fantasies of doctors who genuinely care, with nary a mention of insurance forms or HMOs. It's just that medicine has grown more complicated and even politically thorny. Presumably, the series' beating heart lies between two comforting notions -- the existence of a larger spiritual world and the good a committed physician can accomplish here on Earth once touched by an angel or infused with the milk of human kindness. Whether there's enough material to sustain a series stemming from Michael's pivot toward greater generosity of spirit thanks to Anna's gentle prodding remains unclear. CBS' ratings expectations can't be unreasonably high, and Wilson feels like a star who many CBS viewers will think of not just as gifted but as "that nice-looking young man." Even so, those with a stake in "A Gifted Man's" fate ought to practice the same regimen many follow as they go under the knife: Put trust in the surgeon, yes, but also pray for help from a higher power.Camera, Tom Weston; production designer, John Kasarda; editors, Mark Manos, Michael Schweitzer, Nancy Forner; casting, Bernard Telsey, Risa Bramon Garcia. 60 MIN.With: Julie Benz, Bill Irwin. Letter from Toronto: Friends with Kids Falters in the End, But Does Right By Adam Scott

Jennifer Westfeldt’s sort-of romantic comedy Friends with Kids is on to something, even if in the end it suffers from a failure of nerve. This is actor and screenwriter Westfeldt’s directorial debut (she co-wrote and starred in the 2001 feature Kissing Jessica Stein), and it’s polished to the point of shallow glossiness — it could benefit from being a little rougher, a little messier. But the picture at least attempts to wrestle with the notion that there’s no single right way to raise a family or navigate a partnership. And it acknowledges, if only fleetingly, the way very well-meaning people who are parents can often be incredibly smug toward those who aren’t, insinuating that their own lives are somehow more meaningful because they have kids who run them ragged. At one point Westfeldt and Adam Scott, who play best friends Julie and Jason, ponder how much their friends changed after they had kids. “I don’t know these people anymore,” Jason says, bewildered after he’s just attended a dinner party where frazzled, distracted parents did nothing but snap at one another and at their children, completely unable to enjoy themselves or one another. “These people are mean and angry.” The tide shifts when Jason and Julie decide to have a child together without becoming romantically involved. They’ve been close friends for years, and they live in the same apartment building — why not? The experiment goes surprisingly well, and the two end up with a pretty good kid who really does seem to be enriching their lives. In one of the movie’s most gratifying sequences, their traditionally coupled friends, played by a Bridesmaids reunion cast including Maya Rudolph, Chris O’Dowd, Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm (Westfeldt’s partner in real life), speculate about how out-of-control the new parents’ lives must be, only to find that Jason and Julie’s unorthodox arrangement is extremely efficient and agreeable. But Friends with Kids ends up turning on itself, becoming a more conventional comedy than it sets out to be. In the end, Jason and Julie do end up fitting themselves into a mold, although at least the transition doesn’t come easy. Westfeldt’s Julie is too adorable by half: She’s a cutie-pie neurotic, and the appeal wears thin quickly. But as writer and director, Westfeldt has at least done right by Adam Scott, a fine comic actor who, until now, has been relegated to second-banana roles. A highly unscientific poll conducted here and there among my women friends, straight and gay, has revealed that all women love Adam Scott. I have not been able to determine the source of his charm, but it appears that in addition to being good-looking (but not too good-looking), he tends to come off as the kind of guy who has flaws you could live with: He’s a little smart-alecky but also smart and funny; he might leave his underwear on the floor, but he remembers to hang up his towel; and so forth. As I said, it’s all unscientific. Friends with Kids proves that Scott can carry a movie: His comic timing is crisp and on-point, but he’s also capable of playing it straight when he needs to. He’s marvelous in one revelatory scene where he enumerates Julie’s best qualities, and as written, it’s the sort of dialogue that could head right into pukefest territory, fast. Scott gives Friends with Kids some necessary edge, and though the picture overall could still be much sharper, from scene to scene, he’s key to its integrity. No wonder his Jason is superdad material.

No, Megan Fox Has Not Seen Transformers 3

If you’ve been wondering whether Megan Fox, the Transformers bombshell who dared to compare director Michael Bay to Hitler, has seen Dark of the Moon after being replaced by pouty pin-up Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the answer is no. “I haven’t seen it yet, but I will see it,” Fox told Moviefone. “I mean, if they hadn’t been hitting me so hard on the press tour, I would have gone to the theater. 'Warrior' Director Gavin O'Connor On Film's Ending: 'The Goal Was To Really Make It Surprising'

Despite the fact that it did not dominate this area office over the past weekend, "Warrior" continues to be a movie worth speaking about. Additionally towards the five good reasons to view it which i pointed out a week ago, the film is surprising in most the best ways, one of these being the climactic fight and it is outcome. Without starting spoiler territory, when MTV News swept up with director and co-author Gavin O'Connor, we requested him how he worked out crafting the ending and determining the fates of these two primary figures (performed by Tom Sturdy and Joel Edgerton) - each of which team you are rooting for to win. "Well and not mention who what, one brother must win to win, another brother must lose to win," O'Connor described. "One brother must die and become reborn, one brother must surrender. The thing was to really make it surprising, yet whenever you consider it, inevitable." O'Connor also spoken about how exactly the film is all about a lot more than fighting and MMA. "The expectations of the movie are, 'Oh, it's mma I'd rather not view it,A because in writing [it might appear like one factor], there is however a genuine artistry towards the sport," O'Connor described. "There's an athleticism towards the sport that's in the greatest level, and there's a spirituality towards the sport which i hope I taken because I recognized it, I felt it. ... In ways, the film isn't a fighting movie. It isn't a MMA movie but for your area of the film, for me personally, it is a love letter to individuals men and also the sport." 'Miss Bala'Fox Intl. Prods., the studio's busy local-language production arm for overseas releases, is going to give a number of its slate a niche theatrical push within the U.S.: Gerardo Naranjo's Mexican crime drama "Miss Bala" and Hong-jim Na's South Korean crime thriller "The Yellow Ocean" can get limited domestic runs through twentieth century Fox. Studio will unspool "Bala" March. 14 in New You are able to while "Yellow" will even unspool a while within the fall. D Films prexy David Dinerstein is dealing with Fox to plan domestic marketing and distribution for photos, with discussions for future films within the works. Rollout arrange for "Bala" and "Yellow," however, is one thing of the trial run for Fox and FIP. As the studio is talking about other potential releases, both films' success will settle if the studio releases future Fox Int'l. pictures. News of both photos comes three several weeks after Fox introduced its Fox World Cinema label, made to take advantage of its northern border American ancillary worth of FIP films. Some earlier FIP game titles (for example last year's Indian romantic drama "I'm Khan") have unspooled via Searchlight or side stepped U.S. theaters entirely. "Miss Bala" opened in Cannes' Not Certain Regard section this might and it has guaranteed a place both in the Toronto Film Festival's Contemporary World Cinema selection and also the New You are able to Film Festival this fall. "Bala," professional created by Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna and Geminiano Pineda, is really a co-manufacture of Canana and FIP. "The Yellow Ocean" (also known as "The Killer") also performed in Cannes' Not Certain Regard section after its December 2010 Korean release and gained star Jung-woo ' best actor kudos in the Asian Film Honours. "Ocean" is really a Popcorn Film production in colaboration with Showbox/Mediaplex Corporation and FIP. Under mind Sanford Panitch, FIP produces some 25 films annually, only most of which are thought a great fit for any U.S. release. FIP along with other studio local-language production divisions generally goal for fare more commercial than typical U.S. foreign-language arthouse releases. They are usually created for specific areas and never likely to be launched locally. Sony's worldwide arm launched the monster hit "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" via its Classics arm greater than a decade ago to wild success, but couple of good examples of these synergy have adopted. Music Box's success using its "Girl Using the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy of thrillers might be impacting on Fox plus some other galleries to re-think the possibility of the foreign-language fare. Dinerstein's D outfit has seen success with this particular year's roadshow rollout of Kevin Smith's "Red-colored Condition," accumulating large box office by tying tests to Smith's lecture looks. George Clooney's 'The Descendants' to Close New York Film Festival

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced that Alexander Payne's The Descendants, starring George Clooney, will be the Closing Night film at the 49th New York Film Festival. The festival's main slate consists of 27 feature films and the return of On Cinema, previously titled The Cinema Inside Me, which will feature an in-depth conversation with Payne. This year's festival will also feature programming to complement the main slate, including Masterworks programs. "In many of the films in this year's festival, characters pass from recognition of a problem or situation to actual resistance," says Richard Peña, selection committee chair & program director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. "This confrontational attitude is perhaps a sign of our increasingly polarized times." The Descendants will screen at Alice Tuly Hall on Sunday, Oct. 16 and marks Payne's third time to the NYFF. Sideways and About Schmidt were previously shown. "We are delighted to welcome back Alexander Payne to the New York Film Festival. Payne'snuanced character studies capture the moral chaos lurking just below the surface of everyday American lives," said Rose Kuo, executive director at The Film Society of Lincoln Center.
